Profile of Religion & Science
Judging from the scope and variety of its activities, a very important part of CRCS activities since its establishment is its science and religion program, most of which is funded by the two grants from the John Templeton Foundation. The program has ranged from teaching, international conferences, workshops, research seminar, essay contest, publication of books -especially a textbook on science and religion by Indonesian scholars-, intensive seminars to book publications, production of several videos (based on the International conference, and the subtitling of others) and Enrichment of CRCS library with selected books on science and religion in English, Arabic, and Bahasa Indonesia.
Since establish in 2001, this program has successful. Some of his Accomplishments are:
- Courses on science and religion are offered at CRCS every year since 2001; and Master's theses on science and religion submitted at CRCS.
- Teaching of science and religion for first year students at many universities in Indonesia (as an independent course and part of religion course and philosophy of science course), using our books.
- Science and religion was made an area of concentration at Philosophy Dept of UGM
- Inclusion of science and religion as a part of one concentration at the recently established doctorate program on religious studies, at ICRS.
- Formation of four local society initiatives, pioneered by CRCS (YSSR): i.e. in Salatiga (SCISSOR), Surakarta (ISRAC) and Bandung (BSCR)
- Publication of books on religion and global issues co-authored by two international scholars and several Indonesian scholars and students, published by an Australian publisher.
- Publication in English of conference proceeding consisting of the works of Indonesian and international, Muslim, Christian and Hindu scholars.
- Eight international scholars have come for four research seminars between 2004-2006. 2 others on January 2007.
- April 2006: visit by T. D. Singh, a prominent scholar of science and religion from India.
- April 2005: visit by Tu Wei Ming (Harvard Confucian scholar), holding two talks on ecology and Confucianism, and global ethics.
- November 2006: visit by Billy Grassie, founder of Metanexus, to six cities, organized by CRCS
- June 2007: 2-day workshop by Ted Peters, Martinez Hewlett and Anje Jaeckelen on evolution and religion.
- CRCS library now has one of the best collections on religious studies in general, especially on religion and science, including recent encyclopedias on religion and science and related fields; in three languages: English, Indonesian, and Arabic. Students and visitors have free access to thousands of electronic version of journals listed in EBSCO.
