The combination of Islamic revival and a growing middle class is generating a new market for Islamic education: elite urban Islamic schools. These schools, unlike many of the traditional Islamic educational institutions, are largely not directly connected to a long established Islamic organization such as NU or Muhammadiyah, but rather independent foundations or franchises. Yet tensions between Islamic organizations are being played out, particularly among NU, Muhammadiyah and PKS, as individuals are fighting for real estate in this new market. This presentation will provide a look at two of these new types of schools in Jogjakarta: SD Islam Terpadu and SD Islam Al-Azhar. Although both claim to be promoting true Islam, their interpretations and practices vary, and are experienced not just through the lessons in the classroom, but in the everyday culture of the schools.
The forum is free of charge and on a first-come-first serve basis.
