Prof. Dr. J. B. Banawiratma was born in Krompakan, Yogyakarta. Starting from primary school until the school of teachers on high school level, he spent in Yogyakarta. After that, he went to the novitiate of Education Society of Jesus, in Girisonta, Ungaran. In 1968-1970, he continued at the Driyakarya School of Philosophy, Jakarta. In 1971 he earned a BA from the theology of Sanata Dharma. He was inaugurated as a priest in 1975. His doctorate was received from the University of Innsbruck, Austria in 1980. In 1981, he had the opportunity to learn spirituality studies in Denver, USA.
