What if "Mecca" is not always in Mecca? Across the What if "Mecca" is not always in Mecca?
Across the Indonesian archipelago, Muslims have developed ways of bringing, imagining, and reconfiguring Mecca within local landscapes. One fascinating case is Tembayat in Central Java—a pilgrimage site shaped by Islamic, Javanese, and Sufi traditions  situated in a landscape with a much older Hindu-Buddhist history.

So, is Tembayat simply a “little Mecca”?
Or something more complicated?
