Abstract. Surveys show that the majority of Indonesians are not ready to practice tolerance towards their fellow citizens of different religious and ethnic backgrounds.  Even if schools were to break out of the mono-religious model for religious education, tolerance has to be more than taught in classrooms.  It must be felt and experienced by encountering others.  Founded in 2012, SabangMarauke is an organization that is developing exchange programs for students from across Indonesia in order to instill the values of tolerance and acceptance of diversity within a united and diverse Indonesia. This presentation will discuss actionable steps we all can do to promote peace, tolerance and citizenship.

Speaker. Initiator and co-founder of SabangMerauke, Ayu Kartika Dewi earned an MBA in 2015 at Duke University as a Fulbright scholar.  She is currently Managing Director of Indika Foundation, Jakarta.
