Muslim Women’s Spiritual Movements in the Past 25 Years
This talk will discuss the efforts by Muslim women and gender non-binary to establish inclusive sacred spaces such as Mosque in a Box, using the word Perempuan with the word Mosque in Cirebon, and online Salat-ul-Jum’ah services. It will also explore women efforts to claim authority in ritual performance and leadership such as the first ever khutbah writing workshop for women recently held in South Africa. It will analyze the historical developments, elaborate on the challenges and express the sublime implications of these movements along with their internal contestations and affirmations for the Islam of the 21st century.
Speaker. Dr. amina wadud is retired Professor of Islamic Studies, and Visiting Researcher at the Starr King School for the Ministry, Berkeley, California USA. Co-founder of Sisters in Islam, Malaysia and affiliate with Musawah, a global movement for reform in Islamic Family Law, she is the author of Qur’an and Woman, Rereading the Sacred Text from a Woman’s Perspective (1992) and Inside the Gender Jihad: Muslim Women’s Reform Movements (2006).
