Abstrak
One characteristic ofcatholic pilgrimage places is the existence of spring or well (Jv: sendang). It is usually believed that inthe pilgrimage places happened miracles related to the spring such as healthrecovery. Then, many people came there for getting health recovery or otherhopes.
In Christianity, water issymbol of baptism, new life, and purification. Of course, the existence ofspring in the Catholic pilgrimage places is the sign of new life, hope, andpurification.
This study tries to explorethe meaning of water in the pilgrimage place, especially in the Catholic templein Ganjuran Bantul, a famous Catholic pilgrimage place in Yogyakarta.How the pilgrims understand water in the pilgrimage place? Why the pilgrimswash their faces, and even whole bodies there? Why they believe that they willget health recovery by doing that?
