Antisemitism and Anti-Muslim Bigotry: Can we Combat Unique Forms of Hatred, Together?
Wednesday Forum – November 4, 2020
In the United States and many other places around the world Jews and Muslims are increasingly the objects of hateful rhetoric and targeted violence. This lecture will address what is gained and what is lost when we combat antisemitism and anti-Muslim bigotry (also known as Islamophobia) in tandem. We will discuss how these forms of hatred get caught up in identity-politics in the West as well as on the global stage, and well explore what people can do to address these forms of hatred when they appear in our own communities. Dr. Gordon will draw from hands-on work to consider how the common experience of being targeted due to religious identity can be a source of intergroup solidarity for Muslims and Jews.
Dr. Ari Gordon is director of U.S. Muslim-Jewish Relations for American Jewish Committee, and he co-directs the Muslim-Jewish Advisory Council. His work empowers Muslims and Jews to take action on areas of common concern and foster civil discourse on issues of difference. Ari speaks English, Hebrew and Arabic, and his doctoral research focused on Muslim-Jewish-Christian relations in Islam’s formative period.
