The proposed reclamation and development of Benoa Bay in Bali came to a halt with public recognition that the local Balinese people recognize the bay as sacred and demand that it be protected. This concept was the basis on which a civil society organization named ForBALI as well as the Hindu supreme council in Indonesia or Parisada rejected the plan despite its promised economic benefits. This talk will focus on the roles of theological argumentation and public reason in the discourse on the sanctity of the bay.
Daud Sihombing (MA, CRCS, 2016) is creating projects presenting academic discourse about the politics of the religious and historical through art. He also runs Kamboja Press, an eco-friendly publisher of photo books produced using soy-based inks. This talk is based on his master’s thesis at CRCS.
