There is a tendency in the studies of religious institutions in Indonesia to look at them from the associational perspective, which, in civil society studies, is usually attributed to the French diplomat and historian Alexis de Tocqueville. This talk will offer another perspective for understanding how religious institutions become players in Indonesian politics by examining the role played by civil society–including religious organizations–to constantly review the social contract that binds the state with its citizens.
Abdul Gaffar Karim is a senior lecturer at the Faculty of Social and Political Sciences, Universitas Gadjah Mada. His research focuses on local political recruitment and participation in post-New Order Indonesia.
