Artikel ini menjelaskan kehidupan perempuan di pesantren-pesantren (sekolah asrama) Indonesia, terutama yang berkaitan dengan isu-isu gender dan seksualitas. Kurikulum dan metode pengajaran yang diadopsi dari budaya Arab terkesan sangat tradisional dan mempengaruhi cara berpikir semua santri (siswa pesantren) dan kyai (pemimpin pesantren). Budaya pesantren masih sangat patriarki, misalnya, santriwati tunduk pada aturan ketat dan perempuan dianggap sebagai makhluk berdosa. Kebanyakan pesantren tidak hanya mengatur tubuh perempuan saja, tetapi juga dorongan seksual mereka. Selain itu, santriwati dipersiapkan untuk menjadi istri saleh bagi laki-laki, bukan pemimpin. Meskipun peraturan ketat diterapkan, tetapi kasus relasi sejenis terjadi di pesantren. Mengingat pandangan Islam tentang seksualitas perempuan dan kekuasaan patriarki, hubungan sejenis yang terjadi antara santriwati di pesantren perempuan (berlokasi di Jawa Timur) dapat diartikan sebagai tindakan perlawanan.

This articles reports the Foreign Policy’s 100 Top Global Thinkers of 2010 that includes New York Mayor, Michael Bloomberg and Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf of Park 51.

Michael Bloomberg, the wealthy Jewish mayor of New York City, and Feisal Abdul Rauf, an imam and Kuwaiti immigrant to the US, together remind us that Muslims are part of America and that Islam is not attacking the West.

Both are important figures fighting the stigma imposed upon Islam after the terrorist attacks on the World Trade Center. They believe it was not Islam that attacked America. It was a small group of discontented people who said they represented Islam.

Preaching (Da’wah) as one tool to disseminate the teachings of a religion has a very important role in creating harmony, peace and tranquility in the midst of society. As an instrument which aims to convey the teachings of religion to the common people, not infrequently by the interpreter da’wah (da’i, missionaries, etc.) it is used as a tool to provoke people to do anarchist ways that intolerant and exclusive. So that not a few cases of violence occurring in the community began the process of preaching like this.

Artikel ini mengulas laporan “The Foreign Policy” tentang 100 Pemikir Top Internasional tahun 2010 yang mencantumkan nama Walikota New York, Michael Bloomberg dan Imam Feisal Abdul Rauf.

Michael Bloomberg adalah walikota New York City berdarah Yahudi.Feisal Abdul Rauf merupakan imigran Kuwait yang kemudian menjadi Imam di AS. Mereka telah membuka cakrawala dunia bahwa Muslim merupakan bagian dari Amerika dan Islam tidak menyerang Barat.

Dakwah sebagai salah satu alat untuk menyebarluaskan ajaran-ajaran sebuah agama memiliki peranan yang sangat penting dalam mewujudkan keharmonisan, kedamaian dan ketentraman di tengah-tengah masyarakat. Sebagai sebuah instrument yang bertujuan menyampaikan ajaran-ajaran agama kepada masyarakat awam, tidak jarang oleh para juru dakwah (dai, missionaries, dll) hal ini dijadikan sebagai alat untuk memprovokasi masyarakat untuk melakukan hal-hal anarkis sebagai buah dari materi-materi dakwah (proselytizing) yang intolerant dan eksklusif. Sehingga tidak sedikit kasus kekerasan yang terjadi di tengah masyarakat berawal dari proses dakwah seperti ini.

“Buddhism is merely a minor belief system, a Buddhist is just the same as a Pacifist, and Buddhists are peaceful people…” that is what people in Indonesia or some other countries, where Buddhists are considered a minor community, say about Buddhism. But, what would happen when Buddhists are the major society in a country as in Sri Lanka and Thailand? How do they deal with one another? How do they manage conflict amongst them? How do they deal with diversity?

This would be more interesting if we extend the questions to a conversation about the internal issues of Buddhist communities nowadays. For instance, how are Buddhist knowledge and customs transferred from one nation to another, like the case of Buddhist education and ordination for monks and nuns? Are there any problems on power and gender relation in this regard? And, why do Buddhists consider the concept of “Early Buddhism” and “Engaged Buddhism” as alternative solutions in their everyday life in facing contemporary world and its complexity?
