Abstract:“Religious Discourse, Social Cohesion and Conflict from Religious Studies to Inter-religious Studies”

According to some scholars there is a global resurgence of religion. Moreover there seems to be a growing tension between religions. It is not clear why this is so. I will argue that the classical ways of studying religions and inter-religious relations are not helpful to understand religious dynamics in a post-colonial and post-modern world. The main problem is the underlying essentialism and objectivism of religious studies thus far. I will argue for a narrative theory of religion and for critical discourse analysis as an appropriate method for understanding religious identity constructions in inter-religious relations.

Since the end of 19th century, the Catholic Church Since the end of 19th century, the Catholic Church has conducted missionary activities among the Javanese in Muntilan, Indonesia, establishing it as the first Catholic mission site in Java. The missionary work not only impacted the Javanese but also the Chinese descendants in Muntilan. The conversion of the Chinese to Catholicism in sparked debates among the Chinese community, who perceived it as a contributing factor to the abandonment of Chinese characteristics. This contest leads to the dynamic and diverse identities of Chinese Catholics within the community, as Chinese characteristics and Catholic faith mutually influence each other.
