This talk discusses how Islam as an ideology has been represented into urban space as exclusively Muslim housing and shopping complexes, which have emerged in the context of laissez-faire urban development, the rise of an urban middle class, the New Order’s legacy in today’s urban everyday life, as well as the “good intentions” of those involved. This talk focuses on several “Islamic” estates in Depok, greater Jakarta, by tracing the viewpoints of the inhabitants, developers, and the surrounding neighborhoods from the perspectives of both urban design/architecture and anthropology.
Maria Adriani is a lecturer at the Department of Architecture, Islamic University of Indonesia, Yogyakarta. She is developing a series of critical essays on urban design/ architecture focussed on aesthetics, ideology, and power relations as reflected in contemporary urban spaces in Indonesia.
