Teori animisme bermula dari konstruksi kesarjanaan di Barat abad 19, yang kemudian dibawa ke “Timur” seiring kolonialisme. Teori ini belakangan mendapat kritik karena sifatnya yang evolusionis-esensialis dan bias paradigma modern.

Agama yang dipahami sebagai konsep yang fixed, yang seakan-akan memiliki definisi yang stabil lagi universal, sebenarnya baru lahir belakangan, seturut era Pencerahan di Eropa, dan terbawa ke ‘Timur’ seiring era kolonialisme.
