Di balik kemegahannya, pemahaman tentang Borobudur justru dipenuhi perdebatan, kekosongan data, hingga narasi kolonial yang diwariskan sejak awal abad ke-19. Hudaya Kandahjaya mengkritik kecenderungan kolonial tersebut dan menawarkan pendekatan lain: memahami Borobudur melalui sumber internal candi, prasasti sezaman, dan pengetahuan masyarakat Jawa sendiri.

Across the Indonesian archipelago, Muslims have developed ways of bringing, imagining, and reconfiguring Mecca within local landscapes. One fascinating case is Tembayat in Central Java—a pilgrimage site shaped by Islamic, Javanese, and Sufi traditions  situated in a landscape with a much older Hindu-Buddhist history.
